John M. Rowley, 80Trader who helped launch CBOEby Stan Donaldson, Tribune Staff Reporter.John M. Rowley, a 43-year member of the Chicago Board of Trade and a founding director of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, was known to his friends and family as a man who was always buying and selling. Mr. Rowley's father was a trader and his son Mark joined the business as well. "He was a kind and generous man who was always proud of the fact that there were three generations at the Board of Trade", Mark Rowley said. Mr. Rowley, 80, died Saturday, June 14, of a heart attack at home in Oak Brook. He had been a full member of the Board of Trade from 1947 to 1988 and was on the board of directors from 1969 to 1971. He was a founding director of the Chicago Board Options Exchange in 1973 and a director for 15 years. "He believed in batting singles, and not home runs," his son said describing his father's business philosophy. Mr. Rowley was a partner in John S. Morris Co. from 1970 to 1982. Lee Stern, a former director and member of the Chicago Board of Trade who worked closely with Mr. Rowley during the 1950s and 1960s, said, "He was a very prominent and well-liked member and he will certainly be missed. Rowley was an astute trader. He was an all-around swell guy", Stern said. Mr. Rowley graduated from DePaul University in Chicago with a degree in business. He attended law school but did not finish after serving in the Army in the Pacific during World War !!, his son said. Mr. Rowley retired in 1991 and spent much of his time at his second home in Marco Island, FL. Mr. Rowley is also survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary; two more sons, John Jr. and Matthew; two daughters, Stacy Bock and Susan Kelley; and 10 grandchildren. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, 16th Street and Summit Avenue, Oakbrook Terrace. |
