SARA ROWLEYSara Pearl Rowley, 82, formerly of Quogue died at her home in Clearwater, Florida on May 19. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama and was raised in Panama. She became a world class swimmer and diver, beating the famous Johnny Weismuller in the "Red, White, and Blue Troupe" swimming contest in the Canal Zone. Mrs. Rowley was active in the Masonic, Scottish Rite, and Shrine organizations. She was a veteran member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was an avid gardener and bridge player.She was predeceased by her husband, Captain Samuel Rowley. She is survived by her children, Dorothy Gerhart of Germany, June Stevenson of Georgia, and Samuel Rowley Jr. of Florida; her sister-in-law, Viola Hawkins of Quogue; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held in Clearwater, Florida. A graveside service was held at the Quogue Cemetery on Thursday, August 8, 1996 at 10 a.m. |

Sara and her sister Ruth and
Brother Landon all grew up in the Panama Canal Zone where she met her
husband to be. Capt Samuel Rowley was a Sea Captain whose ship was in Balboa
dry-dock for repairs.
