Obituary

Joanna Marvin was born Sept. 1834, at Nassau, Rensselaer County, New York. She was married to Enoch P. Rowley December 8, 1855. Her death occurred March 3, 1909, at her home in Waterman.

Mr. and Mrs. Rowley came to Aurora in 1857 where they lived for eight years whence they came to this region where their home since been. To them were born nine children, seven of whom are still living. One died in infancy and one at eight years of age.

Mrs. Rowley was a kind wife and mother, and loved by all who knew her. For ten years she has been a consistent and faithful member of the Waterman Presbyterian church. The surviving members of her family are her husband and children, Willis A. and Sidney S. of Waterman, George W. of DeKalb, J. Laville of Lake City, Iowa, Mrs. Ira T. Kirk, Chicago, Mrs. Harry Bradbury, Oregon, Mrs. J. P. Arnold, Manson, Iowa, Marvin E. and Grant M. are deceased. She also leaves sixteen grandchildren, one brother in Aurora and two sisters in New York.

The funeral service was held from the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon at two o'clock where a large company of old friends and neighbors assembled to pay their last tribute or respect to the loved and lost.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. George Dunlap, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. E. J. Aikin of the M.E. society. The floral offerings that covered the beautiful pearl gray casket and all the available space adjacent thereto were of the choicest roses, carnations and lilies, wrought into boquests, pillows, a harp and various other handsome and suggestive designs. The singing was by Mrs. F. A. Brown, Miss Mabel Hipple, Frank Greeley and Guy Matteson with Miss Rose Greeley as accompanist.

The honorary pallbearers were: F. Dean, George Wiltsie, W. M. McFarlane, Hiram Kirkpatrick, H. L. Fuller, O. F. Matteson, A. C. Kauffman, G.L. Giles, Wm. Wiltberger, J. A. Tallman, C. F. Allen and A. McCaskey.

The active pall bearers were: Sidney Willis and George Rowley, sons of the deceased and Harry Kirkpatrick, Clifford Bradbury and Ressie Rowley, grandsons.

In the passing of Mrs. Rowley a sad and irreparable loss is sustained by the husband, who for many years shared his joys and sorrows and his hopes and fears with an ever attentive, ever sympathetic and always patient and loving helpmate, the children and grandchildren a faithful and devoted mother, while her friends and the community at large are bereft of the society, wise counsels and kindly interest of one who lived not for herself alone, but for all who came within the sphere of her gentle influence. Mr. A. J. Heeg had the funeral in charge and the interment was in the North Clinton cemetery. Aside from the children who live away from Waterman and were able to be present, those from a distance were Willard and Ira Marvin from Aurora, Mrs. Clara Drew from Emington, Illinois, Mrs. Cleveland and Mrs. L. Warren of Big Rock and Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Arnold from Leland, Illinois.
