DeadBATTEY--Near Tillamook City, Oregon, on Feb. 4, 1919, James Hervy Battey, aged 81 years, 11 months and 24 days. James Hervy Battey was born on Feb. 10, 1837, in Starksboro, VT., of Colonial parentage. At the age of eighteen years he was brought by his parents to Iowa, settling in Hesper township, Winneshiek county, in 1855. On March 17, 1862, he was united in marriage to Lydia Maria Haines. To this union eight children were born, six of whom survive him, namely, MRS. JULIA M. ROWLEE of Cresco, Iowa; Mrs. Mary L. Nunnemaker, Jenner, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. Ruby A. Bloom of Salem, Oregon; Mrs. Agnes M. Seelye of Berlin, Oregon; Mrs. Nellie R. Blackburn of Hemlock, Oregon; and William C. Battey of Portland, Oregon. There are also eighteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The wife and mother departed this life on April 25, 1884, one daughter (Eva J.) passed away on Nov. 12, 1895, and one son (J. Arthur) on Nov. 12, 1896. Mr. Battey moved to Salem, Oregon, in 1892, and resided in that vicinity for fifteen years. He was a lifelong member of the Friends church and a loyal and conscientious citizen, taking a strong interest in reform legislation. For forty years he was a member of the Prohibition party, rejoicing in his last hours in the success of the long struggle for a dry United States. His death resulted from old age. He passed quietly from life after an illness of four days. The funeral services were held in Tillamook City, and the interment was at Riverview cemetery, Portland, Oregon. |
