MRS. ALVERA SCOTT DEADFirst Settled in Elgin in the Year 1837 Mrs. Alvera Scott passed away at 12:40 o'clock Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harriet Wheeler on Franklin Street. She was born March 9, 1813 at Painted Post, Steuben County, NY, and was the last of a family of 9 to go. She was a daughter of the late Squire Rowley, a prominent lawyer of Painted Post and was married March 8, 1832 at Cuba, Allegheny County, NY to the late I.P. Scott, one of Elgin's first business men, who manufactured the first wagon here. Coming West in 1837 they settled in Elgin, then only a little hamlet and had seen it grow to a thriving city. The family home at one time was on Dupage Street opposite the Spurling. In 1854 the family moved to Iowa, returning in 1858 to this city, which had since been Mrs. Scott's home. Mrs. Scott was a member of the First Congregational Church, and was baptised by the late Rev. N.C. Clark. She was very retiring in her ways and had a host of friends. Fully conscious to the end she assured her friends of her peace in the Savior and of the reward awaiting her. Of her immediate family are four children, two sons and two daughters. They are George of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. Eliza Thompson of Roladia, Wash., Mrs. Harriet Wheeler and Edwin D. Scott of this city. She leaves besides 15 grandchildren & 20 great grandchildren to mourn her loss. The funeral will take place Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from Franklin Street. Burial will be in Bluff City Cemetery. |
