HARTFORD, Conn., July 20 - Dr. Alfred M. Rowley, former Hartford physician and chief surgeon of the Yale University Mobile Unit in France during the first World War, died this morning in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he had resided since his retirement as chief surgeon at Hartford Hospital in December, 1939. His age was 66.

One of New England's outstanding surgeons, Dr. Rowley was well known for his pioneering work in the surgical treatment of goiter.

Dr. Rowley was born in Potsdam, N. Y., and was a son of the late Charles Henry and Martha Brown Rowley. Both grand- fathers were physicians. He attended Middlebury and Amherst Colleges and received his medical degree from the University of Vermont.

After his internship at Hartford Hospital from 1897 to 1890, he served for seven years as assistant visiting surgeon there and then visiting surgeon until 1938. Later he was consulting surgeon at hospitals in several Connecticut cities.

For his work with the Yale mobile unit in France during the first World War, Dr. Rowley received a special citation from General Pershing. Mrs. Rowley, the former Carlotta Munoz, who served as her husband's anaesthetist, received the French Croix de Guerre with palm.

Dr. Rowley was a past president of the Hartford Hospital staff and the New England Surgical Society and a member of many medical organizations.
