| 1641 | Aug. 7 | Sir Drew Drewry,* of Reddlesworth, Knight and Baronett, and Mrs Mary Reynolds, widdow, of this parrish.(* Or "Sir Drue Drury" (for so the patent runs). His grandfather, whom Camden in 'Annales Elizabethe Regine' calls Drugo Drurius, had been placed in conjunction with Sir Amyott Powlett in charge of Mary, Queen of Scots, when it was found that the closer, though really gentler, custody exercised by Lord Shrewsbury, as Grand Marshal of England, left no opening for conspiracy on her part, or for intrigue against her. He was no doubt at the end privy to her death. What irony of fate that the descendants of the jailor of that frail but ill-fated Queen should have been marked for special favour by her royal son and grandson ! for James I. included his father among the 300 (? 133) whom he knighted previously to his coronation in 1605, and Charles I. created the son himself a baronet within a year of his accession. The Mary Reynolds whom he married was the daughter of John Boys, Esq., and had married Mr. James Reynolds. She died in 1649, leaving one only daughter, Margaret, by her first husband. (See her will in Somerset House.)) | |
